It’s been a long time since anything was posted here. Just a question are you trying to gather the many Brother Juniper cartoons not in the books here? 313 cartoons a year times the number of years published equals a lot of cartoons.

You may already be aware of this, but Ernie Colon and Sid Jacobson parodied Brother Juniper in The Colored Negro Black Comic Book back in the early 1970s. http://www.rogerogreen.com/2016/05/27/28377/

Hi there,

I’m just writing to find out if it would be okay to add your comics to our Parish Bulletin, once in a while. Thank you!

Hi!
Yes, I encourage you to use any of the cartoons wherever and whenever you like. Can’t have too much Juniper :)
If you want to use a cartoon in one of the ebooks that you can’t find on the site just let me know and I’ll put it up for you. Thanks for supporting the project!

Hi,
I ordered a copy of The Definitive Brother Juniper from amazon. The book arrived today.
Your web blurb said: “Owners of this edition will receive access to non-DRM ebook versions of every book in the series–for free!”
So how does that work? How do I get access to the free ebooks?
The hard back is much heavier than I expected. Is it possible to put the free ebooks on an iPad? (I just got an iPad. I’m still figuring out how it’s supposed work.)
If the info about ebooks is on Facebook or Twitter, that’s a problem for me because I don’t use social media.
Though, 50 years ago, when I was a kid still learning to read, there was a Brother Juniper book floating around the house. I must have read it a dozen times.
Thanks for the blast from the past.

Hi Margaret,

I sent you an email with detailed instructions. I apologize for the late response. It seems that when I upgraded Wordpress to fix the issue of thousands of spam comments it wound up breaking the comment portion of the site so that existing comments no longer showed up AND it was no longer emailing me when new comments were submitted.

After a couple hours of Googling and working with my very rusty site programming skills I think it is all fixed now though. At least I hope so. Let me know if you encounter any complications downloading the ebooks. Thanks!

I just wanted to let you know that I have Brother Juniper record KAPP kl-1273. The back cover has 3 cartoons and is signed by him. Bill

Hi Bill. Sorry for the late reply! Your message got stuck in the SPAM folder for some reason and I just started sifting through the 1300+ flagged comments. I wasn’t sure what you meant by “record” but after Googling I see it is an actual vinyl LP? What is on it? I can’t imagine how a cartoon book would work on audio only.

I just realized that you had the “Life of Brother Juniper” from the Fioretti in the definitive version. Way to go.

Hi, why have you stopped updating the website and your facebook? Is everything alright? Hope all is well. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. God bless.

Hi Jack. I am so sorry for a bit of a late response–almost a year late. I took what was supposed to be a short break from publishing but personal circumstances extended that break a lot.

After a minor Wordpress update I found that the site was no longer posting to Facebook and vice versa. When I was trying to troubleshoot that I somehow broke the site statistics and the spam filter stopped working. Now that I’m starting to poke around in publishing again I am finding great comments like this buried in thousands of pending spam comments that I have to go through one by one.

I intend to get back some semblance of productivity and hope to dive back into publishing and web design sometime soon. Thank you greatly for your concern!

Thank you for the kind words, Marc. You taking the time to write out a comment in this fast-paced world is like a shot of liquid encouragement and tells me that my labor was well-invested and the project a worthy one–which is infinitely more valuable than a number on a sales report could ever be.

Which cartoons were you interested in seeing in a compilation? The last books he did were Well Done, Brother Juniper, The Whimsical World of Brother Juniper, and The Ecumenical Brother Juniper (this being the most difficult one to find by far). There are probably a handful of cartoons that ran in newspapers after the last book came out but I haven’t looked into that prospect at all yet.

If you or anyone you know has an e-reader of some sort, don’t forget that The Definitive Brother Juniper gives you all eight e-books for free as well. Brother Juniper is a lot lighter and portable in his digital form–considering the complete collection hardback is basically a brick. ;)

Thank you again for your support,
Adam

My information about any later Br. Juniper cartoons is a bit “sketchy” (I never saw them at the time myself) but I’ve now run into a handful of cartoons on the web from the mid-to-late ’60s and 70’s (well after the 1963 pub. date for “The Ecumenical Brother Juniper” or any of the other books). Someone also told me they remember Br. Juniper cartoons from the “St. Anthony Messenger” from the ’80s and ’90s (though perhaps those were reprints of older cartoons).

Where I saw the most recent batch of later cartoons: Wikipedia entry under “Fred McCarthy (cartoonist)” with an external link at the bottom of the article to “ComicStripFan.Com”. There are two cartoons clearly dated 1970 & 1979 (Copyright to Field Enterprises). There are several others that don’t have dates but I don’t think I’ve seen them before. My motivation for bringing this to your attention is simple (and a bit selfish!): I’m hoping there can be even more Brother Juniper books!

“The Definitive Brother Juniper” is indeed a brick — but a wonderful brick! Thanks for your terrific work.

@ Marc: I’ll have to take a look into that. It would make sense that there were cartoons from the 1970’s and later that were never published in a paperback collection. I’m not sure how many there are or if they are something I’ll be able to republish (due to changes in copyright law affecting all work created post-1964) but I’ll check it out. I imagine all the papers from those days are archived on microfiche but I’ve never gotten images that way so I’ll have to see what sort of image quality we’re dealing with as well.

I suppose if there aren’t that many, the images are too low quality, or legal troubles hinder republication then perhaps I could just post whatever cartoons I find on the site instead. Regardless, I’ll do some poking around when I get a chance.

Thanks again, Marc!

Thank you so much for reprinting the Br. Juniper books. I remembered them from when I was a kid in the early ’60s, and had (like you) almost entirely given-up finding them at used bookstores or garage sales — my successes were that limited! So it seemed “a miracle” to accidentally rediscover them earlier this year on the Barnes & Noble web-site — I now have the complete set (plus “The Definitive Brother Juniper” just for good measure!). Thank you again.

I never knew Fred McCarthy continued to draw Br. Juniper for so many years (I only knew the cartoons from a few of the early ’60s paperbacks). Any chance of compiling those later cartoons for the many fans like me who missed all those years?

All the best! And thanks again….
